What is the acceptance rate for legacy ed at UVA? ›

In 2022, legacies made up about 10% of students offered admission and 14% of the first-year class, Brian Coy, a UVa spokesman, said in the summer.

There really is no typical number accepted off the waitlist; it has varied from none to more than 20 percent of the entering class.

We meet 100% of financial need.

This is achieved through a combination of scholarships, grants, work-study and need-based loans.

The admission committee may admit, deny, or defer early applications. Deferral means that the application will be reviewed again during the Regular Decision phase of the admission process. If deferred, we ask that the student or counselor send updated midyear grades at soon as they are available.

Legacy admissions to Virginia universities are no more. Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a bill on Friday that bans universities from giving preferential treatment to students whose family members have attended that university. The state bill was one of a handful that received bipartisan support.

For every 100 applicants, 21 are admitted. This means the school is very selective. If you meet UVA's requirements for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other components of the application, you have a great shot at getting in.

When thinking about how to get into UVA, you should make sure each part of your application—your GPA, test scores, and UVA supplemental essays—is top-notch. Since fewer than 5% of students were admitted during the defer review in previous cycles, we made the decision to eliminate deferral and offer the waiting list option to give students a more accurate sense of their chances of admission.

How many students are admitted as part of legacy admissions? The AP has reported that based on reports by the University of Southern California, 14% of 2022's admitted USC students had family ties to alumni or donors. Stanford reported a similar rate.

For example, several Colleges of Medicine advertise special programs (here and here) or guaranteed interviews for legacy students, while simultaneously noting that legacy status does not factor into the likelihood for acceptance into the medical school.
